Maxi Alpha 3 redo
« on: February 15, 2016, 12:22:47 PM »
We built a maxi alpha 3. it turned out nice, but on the first flight it died from a motor cato. here is the last living picture...

I orderd some new BT-80 tube and coupler, a new 12" 24mm motor tube and some centering rings from rocketarium. I made new TTW fins out of 1/8" ply from Michael's. skipped all the earlier photos but here is the assembly shots.

Ya know how when you slot the body tube it kinda bows out? this was annoying me when I glued the fins in, then I realized a pencil would fit perfectly between the BT-80 tube and the 3" hole in my fin template from a previous build. This should hold the body tube inline while the wood glue dries

used wood glue to glue in the rear centering ring making sure the hunk of wood is under the line for rail buttons. there is one under the front ring at the top of the 12" motor tube.

I'm sure you're thinking "if you're building it from scratch why wouldn't you put a 29mm motor mount in it"? That's a good question, but I really like the Aerotech 24/40 motors and they are coming out with new loads for the 24/60. no need for 29mm. it may even fly on Estes D12's or E's if it doesn't weigh too much.

all glued up. need to fill and sand the seam in the body tube and throw on some paint. We didn't put the decals from the original Maxi Alpha 3 on before it was burned at the stake so those will go on this one.

mostly sticking with the original color scheme. with a little masking tape magic we have red fins! the top red band is higher here than original but I liked it better that way.

after a couple hours in the rocket curing oven at 130 F the paint is cured and decals are on. these are stick on decals so yeah, perfection is not easy. that bottom one is a little off.... oh well.
