Jonah's Super Neon XL
« on: February 13, 2016, 06:24:36 PM »
it's below zero out today, so Jonah's building a super neon XL. We made a few mods to the kit so I'll post some pics. He also opted to exclude the little fins. I'll have to check the stability on it but I think it will be ok. if not we can always put them on.
filing the bumps off the paper centering rings. Harbor freight files work great for this.

Here's a good tip, when building estes kits, grind down the top of the motor hook to around 1/8". If you do this you will be able to use Aerotech re-loadable motors. The AT 24/40 fits a standard D motor hook, the 24/60 fits a standard E motor hook, and the 18/20 fits the 18mm A/B/C motor hook, as long as you grind them down. Even if you don't have re-loadable motors I recommend doing this in case you decide to get them down the road.

I've had too many bad experiences with the rubber band shock cords so we like to use Kevlar. I ran out of 1/6" so we're using about 10ft of 1/8" tubular kevlar. nice stuff. hopefully it doesn't spend 30 years in a tree  ;D

very cool about the hooks being shortened . I did not know that..  I too am working on a super neon XL. waiting for paint now. One thing I did to mine was to add 2 18mm motor mounts inside 2 of the fin tubes. I am looking for a little extra umph off the pad.

Greg, the extra 18mm's should be fun. I've been thinking I need to get some cluster builds going.

Jonah glued on the tubes then said hey, we should have glued those on the longer tube and used the shorter one for a payload tube. He is right. oh well.

Although not needed for stability, we decided we liked the looks of the fins at the very aft of the rocket in a different orientation. here it is in open rocket. to put the little fins on there is a 0 inch thick 0 in long tube at the OD of the tube fins. this messes up the altitude of the sim. without the phantom tube and fins it sims around 1600' with an F35.
