High Power / Cornell Rocketry Team NASA SLI
« on: April 10, 2017, 04:20:51 PM »
Well, just got back from Huntsville and the 2017 NASA Student Launch. The team has finished its third year of competition, taking 4th the first year, 3rd overall last year with a win in the Mars Accent Vehicle Challenge (and a $25,000 dollar check, as well as best vehicle design honors). This year we ended up with 2 out of the five technical awards, winning the Project Documentation award, as well as the Safety and Risk Mitigation award. The flight went so-so, we had payload issues and an altimeter issue on the third deployment, we will see in a couple weeks how we finished overall.

The team really appreciates having the field for their test flights, They and I  would like to thank Don Tennies, Riley Keller, and Greg Elling for their support on the test flights this winter in some really less than ideal conditions. The Potter field supports other teams as well, and the RPI team led by Jody Johnson expressed their sincere thanks for being able to get one test flight in before their first year down.

Both teams had successful flights on Sunday- we pulled the plug about 11 am on Saturday due to cloud cover and ungodly wind.

sorry Mike, just saw this post. Blew up on the pad...  Aerotech L1300, AT looked it over and the findings were that the early run of DR rocket hardware had issues with some very soft alloy that caused the threads in the forward closure to strip and blow. they are rebuilding and plan to try again this Saturday.

Rick has some great observations!

Just a couple things I will add for changes for the next time-

a port-a -john or two up near the flight line.

A speaker pointed out at the field attached to one of the inboard towers, that way people loading can hear what is going on.

Yea, I have a 75 CF Goose coming SOMEDAY, also have a custom 98mm carbon build on the bench with a Binder aluminum fin can. If you paint the can, it CAN fly at Argonia, a least that's what they told me. That should go 40k plus on a 6 grain. Argonia is an awesome place, a bunch of us need to go for sure...

got a custom Scorpion from Mike for a Christmas present for my boy Dean, wants to get his Jr L1 and L2 next year. Mike changed out the MM to 54 and stretched the booster 14" and the payload 2". Great stuff he sells!
