Title: Started my next project - 1/22 scale Saturn IB
Post by: David Carter on August 03, 2016, 01:26:42 PM
My plan post Level 3 was to work on some less expensive low power builds for a while. I'm doing that, but honestly it's less inspiring for me.

I came across a thread describing a large Saturn IB scratch build and I decided to do a parallel but slightly different build. I was torn abut where to put the build thread, but decided to do it on the rocketry forum so that others could look at the builds side by side. I'll post some smaller updates here, but the main thread is at http://www.rocketryforum.com/showthread.php?135578-Another-Saturn-IB (http://www.rocketryforum.com/showthread.php?135578-Another-Saturn-IB)

This is going to take a while...

Starting to come together. This is from a dry fit, but I've actually started gluing some parts. There was a lot of man hours to get to this stage. Read more at http://www.rocketryforum.com/showthread.php?135578-Another-Saturn-IB (http://www.rocketryforum.com/showthread.php?135578-Another-Saturn-IB)

Well Dutch, if you hadn't convinced me to add carbon fiber to my fins, none of this would have been possible! CF and fiberglass isn't so scary now.

Well, two years in a row my projects were the first in the featured flights list. Now I guess I have to get this in a flyable state for June! :)

I'll be in Thailand, China, Australia, Georgia, and Texas between now and then, so flyable is the key. Finished may be a stretch, but I'll try anyways.

Some of you got to see this fly last November, although not without issues. I then had to put it on hold as my plan was to move to Australia for a few years. Well, apparently I'm too old to move to Australia, and can't get the required work visa. It looks like I'll be back either next month or early October.

That means I can finish this build in time for the Apollo 11 anniversary! Plans for repairs and upgrades are already underway.

In the meantime, I've started a video series to document this build. Check it out at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4xGgMHU40BHQAXmDcR9IuA (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4xGgMHU40BHQAXmDcR9IuA)

Fantastic video series, David. I really enjoyed the part 1 and 2 of the nose cones videos.
