MAC Performance 54mm Scorpion DD
« on: March 04, 2017, 04:02:04 PM »
AHH! it's MARCH! Time to put some glue on this MAC kit! apparently that's all these need. This is my first MAC kit and I'm really impressed with the fit and finish of all the parts. also, this is the most complete high power kit I've seen. everything you need to build a DD kit, including the AV bay hardware!

Started with the motor tube. after dry fitting and measuring I glued the front two rings on and the shock cord mount. I'm using 30 min epoxy for this. I was careful not to get epoxy on the shock cord as this can create a weak point where the cord will eventually fail.

after washing the inside of the tube I scuffed up everywhere I plan on getting epoxy.

First I masked off the shock cord. don't want epoxy on it...

Spread a ring of 30min epoxy just past the fin slots and then stuck the lime in the coconut!
pushed it about 1/4" too deep then pull it back to make a nice fillet on the front centering ring. the middle ring doesn't have much epoxy on it but that's fine. it will probably get some on it when I glue in the fins.

I did not epoxy in the aft ring yet, it's just there to make sure everything is lined up correctly.

while that cures I started the nosecone bay I also got from MAC. This is where I will put my eggfinder GPS tracker.
Per the instructions (yes I read them) I hacked off the back of the nosecone. There was some funky lumps inside due to the molding process so I used a dremel to round out the inside until the PVC bulkhead fit.

you cant't really tell in the pics, but the first one was lumpy and the 2nd is not... I had a little loctite plastic epoxy so I used that to glue the tube into the bulkhead.

Also epoxied the centeringring inside the nosecone. kinda clever how you slip it in sideways then it falls back down where it is supposed to be.

Excellent!  I'm about halfway through my 54mm Zodiac build.  I really like this size kit.   They'll fly on basically anything.

I had a small tail cone printed that will install under the 38mm retainer cap.

I buttered the edges of the fins with Rocketpoxy, stuck them in, pulled them out, added more and stuck them in again. With the Aft ring off I was able to see a good amount of epoxy on the entire edge so I stuck on the aft ring with some leftover rocketpoxy and let it cure. Once cure I did rocketpoxy fillets. The printed ring and motor mount are not glued on yet, just checking fit.
