Greg Young from MARS just announced that they are hosting NAR's NSL (National Sport Launch) on memorial weekend next year instead of NYPOWER.

I want to wish the hard working Good people of MARS lots of luck with this event.

Events / July 29 -30 Launch
« on: July 14, 2017, 06:35:17 PM »
I'm really looking forward to this Launch. Due to my involvement as BFR Manager at URRF 4 I wasn't able to fly any of the rockets I had planned to there. So I will be doing my best to fly them all in July. Any Idea if the Launch tower will be available to use at least with the 1515 rail on it? A Mega Weasel with a 1515 on it would work, but I would really like to use the tower if possible. Also due to the last minute rain shower on Sunday at URRF 4, two of my Level 3 Certifications had to scrap their effort, both plan to be at the July Launch so other than my flights that I want to do I'll be helping them with theirs too.
No matter what, July should be an interesting launch to be at, looking forward to it. Who is the Launch Director for that launch by the way?
Inquiring minds want to know. :)

7/18 update; I was just contacted by another L3 Cert candidate who was not able to make it to URRF 4. He is also hoping to be at the July launch to try to achieve his L3 Cert. Looks like I'm going to be busy again. At least Larry, our new Prefect, can handle any and all L1 and L2 Certs, see ya all there.

Low and Mid Power / Jart/Silver Bullet Rebuild
« on: September 10, 2016, 10:42:11 AM »
OK, so at LDRS 31; Tim Lear had a small Jart special sale where if you bought the kit and came back the next day with it built and ready to fly he gave you a CTI three grain case and load to fly it with. It is an all fiberglass kit with a 2 1/4" air frame 12" long, ( it's basically a 54 mm motor mount tube), 1/16" fins and centering rings and a 29mm fg motor mount, it also came with a plastic nose cone. If I remember correctly it sold for about $35. I paid a little extra for the Aero Pack retainer that fit it, but the deal was more than worth it, and yes I did bring it back the next day completely built and got the motor case and load too.
Believe me as I was the Launch Director for the event, even I was amazed that I had it finished.

Well after I painted it chrome the name, "Silver Bullet", seemed to fit it, so that's what I called it. And no, I really don't drink Coors that much. I flew it a half a dozen times but stopped after the second fin started to come loose. Evidence of just how too quickly I built it in the first place.

So yesterday I picked it up off my 'rockets to be repaired' bench and decided it was time to fix it. Both loose fins popped out easily and the third fin came out with a good rap down on the edge of my bench. I was able to pop the motor mount and centering rings by using a 2" diameter dowel and then got the centering rings off, all with out any damage. The only thing that I left on was the Aero Pack retainer as I at least did use JB Weld to mount that. I also replaced the 1/4" scorched and frayed flat Kevlar with some 1/8" round Kevlar so I would have more room for a bigger motor.

After sanding everything down to remove excess epoxy I started to put it all back together this time using JB Weld for everything.
In the photo you see the fins, the airframe, and the nose cone along with the motor mount assembly ready to be epoxied back into the airframe. The rectangular hole you see in the bottom of the nose cone is for my tracking transmitter. With a rocket this small, I want to get it back!

I will post a few more photos as I continue and finish it.

High Power / XXtreme Blue
« on: February 22, 2016, 04:39:47 PM »

So here is my next project, I actually started this about four years ago. I guess now is as good as any time to finish it, I'll try to have it ready by URRF 3
 'XXtreme Blue'
There is all 6" blue tube for the airframe. Starting on the left is the fin can/motor mount. It has 1/2 plywood delta fins mounted thru the wall to a 4" motor mount with an Areo Pac motor retention already assembled. At the top of it you see the BluT coupler, inside it is a section of sliced BluT to make the coupler a double wall construction. The short section to the right is the drogue bay with the altimeter bay in the top of it, the Alt bay will also be Dbl wall const. To the right of that is the Main chute bay along with a pile of cut bulk heads cut out of 3/4" birch plywood. Then to the right again is the conical nose cone,
the whole rocket will be +/- 12' tall.
I'll add more detailed photos to our URRG forum as soon as I get started on the project.

FYI; the big tubes, FG nosecone and FG fins you see behind this are a Nike Smoke project that will be a future build sometime in the future. (This is another project I have been collecting parts for since LDRS 31)

Events / RED GLARE; April 8th - 10th
« on: December 04, 2015, 12:35:59 PM »
Hi Everyone,

MDRA has announced the dates for Red Glare this coming April. I was wondering if any of you would like to make the trip out there and enjoy what is sure to be another great Launch. I would like to go myself but being on SSD means I only have so much I can afford. But if there are a couple of you who would be willing to share driving time, gas and room expenses, then I could go. You would have to pay for your MDRA membership and range fees as well as your own food, but it's well worth going on the trip.

Usually I like to head out on Thursday morning so I can set up a canopy on the field that evening and be ready to fly first thing on Friday morning.

So how about it, anyone interested in attending Red Glare this spring?
